Staff Background Information and Qualifications Policy
STAFF REQUIREMENTS
All employees and volunteers at Manchester Sailing Association (MSA) must have a background free of unbecoming or criminal conduct, such that their history would not inhibit their ability to safely and effectively perform their work duties nor endanger the campers of the Program. All employees of the Program shall meet the standards outlined in the 105 CMR 430.100.
JOB DESCRIPTIONS AND HIRING QUALIFICATIONS
Program Director
The Program Director will be the first contact parents have with Manchester Sailing Association. They, therefore, must be friendly, courteous, and knowledgeable of the rules, regulations, and operations of the MSA. The Program Director must be enthusiastic about the sport of sailing and seek to expose students to the fundamentals of sailing as well as the importance of the natural environment in which we sail and the basic leadership skills inherent in the sport of sailing. A firm grasp of how children learn, particularly in hands-on activities is also important.
Primary Supervisor: The Program Board
Qualifications:
Must be at least 21 years of age
Have either…
Successful completion of a course in camping administration such as those offered by national professional camping associations, national agencies, or their equivalent

At least two seasons of previous experience working as part of the administrative staff of a recreational camp for children.
Senior Instructors
Senior sailing instructors will be first contact that the student has with Manchester Sailing Association. They, therefore, must be friendly, courteous, and knowledgeable of the rules, regulations, and operations of the MSA. Instructors must be enthusiastic about the sport of sailing and seek to expose students to the fundamentals of sailing as well as the importance of the natural environment in which we sail and the basic leadership skills inherent in the sport of sailing.
Primary Supervisor: The Program Director, or on-site designee
Qualifications:
Must be at least 18 years of age or have graduated from high school.
Must have a passion for sailing, the environment and working with kids.
Must have a positive, enthusiastic and flexible attitude.
Must possess strong problem solving skills and an ability to adapt to changing program needs depending on weather, number of students, number of boats, etc.
Junior Instructors
Junior Instructors play an integral role in the safe, fun, and effective operation of the Program. They, therefore, must possess strong problem solving skills, a hard work ethic, and the ability to fulfill daily, weekly, and monthly responsibilities. Junior Instructors are expected to assist and aid their Senior Instructors in the execution of their class. Junior Instructors should possess the sailing skills necessary to captain small sail-craft in all weather conditions. Junior Instructors should be safe and proficient powerboat operators with a clear trajectory toward effective operation in all reasonable weather conditions.
Qualifications:
Must be at least 16 years of age
Must receive a positive recommendation on sailing ability from an MSA instructor or reference from another club.
